Scuttling of the CSS Neuse Living History
Join us at the CSS Neuse State Historic Site and Governor Caswell Memorial for a memorial for the crew of the CSS Neuse in commemoration of the scuttling of the CSS Neuse. We will have a reading of the names of the crew members that served onboard the CSS Neuse during its service. There will be groups of naval reenactors giving talks and demonstrations about Navy life during the Civil War. Some of the Naval Groups will be firing a cannon to commemorate the day. The site will be opened from 9 am to 5 pm.

Living History and Tours
Join us at the Neuse II, a full size replica of the CSS Neuse in downtown Kinston. Civil War reenactors will be conducting a living history and tours of the boat.

Symposium about the North Carolina Colored Troops
The Black Heritage Society will host a symposium about the North Carolina Colored Troops in Kinston, Friday March 11 at the Kinston-Lenoir County Visitor’s and Information Center on 70 Bypass at 1:00 pm and Saturday March 12 at the Hampton Inn from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm. There will be free seminars and workshops on African American participation in the Civil War. Presentations will be made by experts, storytellers, reenactors and others. Students, educators, historians, scholars and the general public are encouraged to attend. On Saturday evening an Awards Banquet will be held at the Hampton Inn starting at 7:00 pm. Harriet’s Chapel and Starr’s Battery Site Tours
The Historical Preservation Group will offer tours of an old church that represents Harriet’s Chapel, a focal point on the Kinston Battlefield and you may view the remaining earthworks at Starr’s Battery, an artillery position. 12 pm to 4 pm. For additional information 252-522-0540.
